Changing dentists

Hi Dr. Choo:
I would like to switch dentists, I am located in Toronto.

I've been seing my current dentist for over one year and had all my x-rays done and exams with her.  My insurance coverage only covers new patient exams and certain x-rays every 36 months.  Can I change dentists, if I am not happy with mine.  How can I get around the new patient exam billing since I can afford to pay for it out of pocket?  I do have my x-rays on e-mail, so these are avaialable and easy to send to a new dentist.

thanks,
Rajan.

Dentistry is a health profession but it is also a competitive business that needs to please its clients. Delivering quality dental care starts with a trusting relationship with your dentist. It's unfortunate your present dentist isn't a right fit with you, so of course you can switch dentists.

Since you have had a new patient exam and radiographs one year ago, most dental offices will not charge that code again. We trust your current dentist was thorough and complete in her analysis and diagnosis and subsequently recommended appropriate treatment plans. However, since you are not happy at your current office, most insurance companies will pay for a specific exam (same price as a new patient exam) for another dentist to examine you. Unfortunately, some insurance companies will not pay for ANY examinations for a specified time (eg. 6 months) after a new patient exam code has been billed. You can look at your insurance plan booklet, check online or visit your HR representative for your detailed coverage.

I recommend you visit other dental offices, meet the dentist, meet the staff, and get a "feel for the office". If you like your first impression, ask if they offer a free consultation. You can then discuss with them your dental and insurance concerns. Some offices will even waive the new patient exam, if they feel you're going to be a loyal client for years to come!

Good luck, and hope you find your right match soon!
